Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who is KAYU® International, Inc.?
A. Check out our About and Our Team pages!
Q. Where can I purchase KAYU® Hardwood products?
A. KAYU has official dealers strategically located throughout the US and Canadian markets. Please contact us to find your local distributor.
Q. Can I use Kayu® Hardwood indoors and outdoors?
A. Yes, our hardwood is suitable outdoor or indoor use. The hardwood species that KAYU selects are durable, dense and rot resistant. Our Batu and Golden species are Class A Flame Spread rated.
Q. Does Kayu® hardwood decking and lumber require a lot of maintenance?
A. No. One of the many benefits all of our selected hardwood species is that they are low maintenance. While we recommend staining or sealing all of our woods before installation for exterior applications, many customers let their wood weather to a beautiful natural gray, meaning no maintenance at all. Otherwise, it’s just cleaning and re-applying finish every few years.
Q. What exterior stain should I use on my Kayu® deck or siding?
A. We recommend Messmer’s UV Plus for Hardwood Decks for all of our species in any exterior application. UV Plus is an oil-based stain designed to protect hardwoods from UV damage and mildew. Stain all 4 sides of every board before installing – only staining 1 side can lead to the wood warping due to the way wood absorbs and expels moisture.
Q. Does Kayu® hardwood have knots, checks or wane?
A. No – all of our selected species are 100% clear grade, which means minimal to no knots or blemishes.
Q. Does Kayu® hardwood need to be acclimated to my local climate before installation?
A. No. There is no need to acclimate the wood to your local climate because all of KAYU’s wood is already Kiln-dried (KD).
Kiln-Dried lumber uses a highly sophisticated process of computer and operator controlled heat and humidity to adjust and regulate the drying of the lumber. KD has an enormous advantage – not only is the wood dried uniformly to a precise 12-14% MC; the wood is stable and shrinkage is done, losing most its water during the drying process, resulting in far less weight. With true Kiln-dried wood, there will be no kiln stick-marks or mold on the wood.
Q. How do I clean my Kayu ® deck?
A. You can clean your exotic hardwood deck as you would any traditional deck: with a broom, blower, garden hose or pressure washer. Like all wood product, routine long-term maintenance is ideal to maintain color richness. Or if preferred, your deck can be left natural to a soft silver-grey patina color. Periodically power washing is advised. For more information, check out our Maintenance and Refinishing Guidelines
