When building your brand new KAYU Hardwood Deck, it’s important to remember some key factors.  Hardwoods are a natural wood product and will expand in rainy, humid weather and contract in hot, dry weather.  If your deck is installed without proper airflow and spacing to allow for expansion and contraction you will inevitably face some issues down the road.  Below are a few installation tips:

• Please follow your local building codes
• Keep all decking materials dry, clean and out of direct sunlight prior to finishing and installing
• If you wish to apply a finish/sealer to your deck, you must stain all four sides of your deck boards with a penetrating finish prior to installation.  Staining only one side can lead to uneven moisture content and increase the likelihood of cupping.
• If a weathered, silvery color is your preference, leave all four sides untreated and allow to silver out over time.
• Allow adequate ventilation.  Install with a minimum ground clearance of 18″ with well ventilated airflow on at least 2 sides of the deck (at least 50% unrestricted airflow)
• If less than 18″ ground clearance is necessary, we recommend using 5/4 X 4 deck boards.
• Create a slope for drainage so there is zero chance of standing water under your deck.
  
• 5/4 X 6 and 5/4 X 4 KAYU Batu can be spanned up to 24″ on center, but recommend 16″ for an increasingly stronger deck.  We recommend spanning 1 X 4 and 1 X 6 16″ on center.  For other KAYU decking products allowable spans please contact KAYU directly or speak with your builder.
• Adequate spacing is extremely important.  Please space your 6″ deck boards at least 1/4″ from side to side and 4″ decking at least 3/16″ from side to side.  Allow 1/4″ spacing from any structures.  (In wetter locations, we insist on a minimum gap of 5/16” for 6” decking and a minimum of ¼” for 4”.)
•  Ends can be trimmed and butt tightly.
• Since KAYU hardwoods are so dense, all material must be pre-drilled.  We recommend stainless steel screws.  Do not use hidden clip fasteners!  The Kreg Deck Jig is a concealed fastener option we do recommend as it gives the option of 1/4″ or 5/16″ spacing between each board.
• Please use proper safety equipment such as dust masks and safety glasses.

Hidden fastening systems for decks are definitely here to stay.  But there are so many options, how do you choose?  We have tried and tested the Kreg Deck Jig Concealed Fastening System and are very impressed.

1. First place the included spacer rings alongside your deck board to allow the proper airflow and ventilation so important to building a long lasting deck.
2. Then, with the assistance of the Kreg Deck Jig, simply pre-drill holes into the edge of your decking using the included step bit, guided by the jig’s drill guides.
3. Finally, drive the specialized Kreg screws (we prefer stainless steel) through the drill guide and into the joist while the depth collar controls the depth.  Just like that you have secured your KAYU hardwood decking with no visible fastener.

Please note:  We recommend the Kreg Deck Jig Concealed Fastening System not only for its strong wood to wood bond and beautiful hidden fastener end result, but also because it allows proper spacing between each board.  The Camo Hidden Fastening System is another similar concealed fastening system.  However, the Camo only allows 3/16″ spacing for 6″ boards.  We have found through several years’ experience, 3/16″ does not provide enough room for long term expansion for our 6″ boards and recommend a minimum of 1/4″.  The Camo system will work  for 4″ boards where 3/16″ does leave enough room for expansion for this size of decking.  Under no circumstances do we recommend hidden clip fastening systems.

Unless your deck has never been exposed to the elements or had anyone set foot on it, sooner or later it will need to be cleaned.  This is true of any decking material, whether it be PVC, composite, pressure treated, domestic wood or exotic hardwood.  Just think of how your car would look like if it had never been washed…

Cleaning your deck doesn’t have to be strenuous or time consuming.  Cleaning once a year is a good idea, twice is even better.

Lightly pressure washing on a low setting, no closer than 12″ to the deck’s surface is one cleaning method.  We suggest starting in an inconspicuous area, on the lowest setting, increasing pressure slightly until effective.  Remember, pressure washing your deck can be detrimental if done carelessly, please do so with caution.  Because of the tight knit grain of KAYU hardwood decking, sanding will not be required.  Simply allow your decking to thoroughly dry (normally a minimum of 24 hours, longer if you live in a wetter climate) and re-finish if you would like.

Using a cleaner and/or brightener formulated for hardwood decks is also an option.  Messmer’s makes one we like.  You can also use oxygen bleach (never chlorine bleach) by mixing a small amount of powder with warm water and applying to an already well hosed down deck.  Let sit for a few minutes and then gently clean with a nylon brush.  Hose down again after.

Whatever cleaning method you use, as long as you exercise caution, you should have a brand new looking deck in no time.
